Once two friends were passing through a dense forest. The forest was full of
ferocious animals. The two friends were very much frightened. But they promised
to help each other if necessary. When they were in the middle of the forest,
they saw a bear approaching towards them. Thinking of the imminent danger one
of the friends climbed a tree and managed to save his life. The other friend
did not know how to climb a tree and so he lay down on the ground. He held his
breath and lay on the ground like a dead man. He knew that a bear never eats a
dead body. The bear came to him and smelt him and it took him to be dead. Then
the bear went away. The friend on the tall tree came down and asked him what
the bear told him. He said to his friend that the bear advised him to beware of
a false friend and not to believe a friend who leaves his friend in danger.

Dear Puja,
I received your letter yesterday. In your letter you wanted to know about the
significance of the proverb “a friend in need is a friend indeed.” Now, I am
telling you a story that will make you understand its significance.
There lived two friends in a village. They promised that they would help each
other even at the time of danger. One day, they were passing through a deep
forest. Suddenly, a bear came in front of them. They both were afraid. One of
them quickly climbed upon a tree. But the other friend did not know how to
climb a tree. Suddenly, he remembered that the bear does not eat a dead animal.
So, he lay down on the ground like a dead man. The bear came and smell his
body. He stopped breathing. The bear went away thinking him dead. Thus his life
was saved and he realized that his friend was not real at all, because he
hurriedly climbed upon a tree selfishly without thinking that the other one
also might need his help.
No more today. I am fine. With best regards to your parents and love to the
younger’s.
Your loving friend
Sreeja
